A new Teacher's Guide has been added to the Teacher's
Resources page. This guide is for the book, "The Scramble
for Africa: Darfur - Intervention and the USA," by Steven Fake
and Kevin Funk. This material is appropriate for college-level or
high school AP courses in history, political science, international
relations, and peace and conflict studies. This
guide serves as an excellent resource relating to the background
on the north south civil war, as well as critical commentary on
the Darfur conflict.
New Teacher's Guide
As
a result of Michigan State University Freshman and East Lansing
One Town Read program, we now have a new Teacher's Guide available
for download.
In developing this curriculum, we attempted to provide supplementary
materials for grade 9/10 English Language Arts and Social Studies
classrooms that will be using the text "They Poured Fire on
Us from the Sky." Our hope is that it can be used as a way
to fully engage students in the text and the ideas surrounding the
text in a personal, meaningful manner.
We are very proud to announce that
They Poured Fire on Us From the Sky is now available in Korean!
The
Town of Abyei (Sudans Kashmir) Has Ceased to Exist May 30, 2008 A
very close friend of the authors of They Poured Fire on Us From
the Sky,Ajieng Deng, town of
Abyei no longer exists. The Khartoum-controlled Sudanese Armed Forces
has displaced the town's entire civilian population and left its
buildings in ashes. These events were predicted, and absent effective
word and action, they became inevitable. Somehow, the government
of the United States missed all the signalsagain. The United
States has not even made a public statement regarding the violence
Khartoum instigated in Abyei, the resulting humanitarian emergency,
the damage done to the implementation of the Comprehensive Peace
Agreement, or CPA, or prospects for peace and democratic transformation
in Sudan.
According to most Sudan experts, Abyei is a unique bellwether of
war or peace between Khartoum and Sudan's South. And now that direct
combat between the military wings of the CPA signatories has occurred,
the country faces a serious threat of a return to full-scale war
throughout the country. The Bush administration and other interested
parties must step up and make sure the international community is
doing all it can to bring peace to all of Sudan.
Lost Boy of Sudan Benjamin Ajak speaks at the
Clocktower on February 28. The event had to be moved outside due
to an unexpected large turnout.
A
riot almost occurred outside Art 214 this past Thursday, as many
upset students were denied entrance five minutes before Benjamin
Ajaks speech. The door was locked to the sold-out event.
Ajak is one of the Lost Boys of Sudan who had to leave his home
at the age of 5 to escape the attack of government
troops on his village during the Sudanese civil war in 1987. continue

Drill Wells in Benson, Alephonsion, and Benjamin's Villages
Water for Sudan has a drilling rig in the area this fall of 2007
and can put wells into the authors' of They Poured Fire on Us From
the Sky villages if we can just raise the money for three wells
at $7000 per well. These wells will change lives. Right now, they
are forced to drink water often contaminated with cholera and parasites
that cause pain, suffering and death. Click
the link above to find out how you can help. Freshmen

One
Book Yuma has chosen 'They Poured Fire on Us From the
Sky' as their 2007 book pick
One Book Yuma is a joint literacy effort to encourage
people to read and contemplate the same book, and come together
to discuss it in a variety of settings. Be part of a community reading
project that touches on one of the most important issues of our
part of the country. What some are calling the first genocide of
the 21st Century.
They Poured Fire was a wonderful choice for our annual community
literacy project. It mobilized our community like no other previous
selection, connected people in classrooms and discussions, and provided
teachers teachable contemporary literature. By itself, the book
was a tremendous vehicle for discussion and learning, and it expanded
the world of our citizens. But the author visit just blew the doors
off our city. We reached almost 1,000 people in 24 hours. Most venues
were to capacity, and the Literacy Center was standing-room only.
Benjamin and Benson and Judy had the audience rivited with their
presentations, which were part education, stern lecture, humorous
story-telling, and live music. I know, from the reactions of people
that attended the sessions, that this will prove to be a life-changing
event for many students, teachers and book-lovers in Yuma, AZ. Thanks
to Benson, Benjamin and Judy for your insightful and touching presentations.
Yuma is better for it.
Benson's art work recently sold out at Primitive Kool Gallery,
but make sure to visit this
site to view his art, and also to view more pieces that will
be available in the coming weeks.
The band Thong
Jieng played this weekend at Primitive Kool Gallery in San Diego
Composed and pleasant, the lanky young man at the
podium did not seem to be someone who could have witnessed incredible
atrocities in his early life. But as he detailed in the book that
he co-authored, They Poured Fire on Us from the Sky: the True Story
of Three Lost Boys from Sudan, Benson Deng is a survivor of genocide
- one of 27,000 young boys who fled Sudan in 1987. As part of an
all-school summer reading assignment, Middlesex freshmen and sophomores
read his extraordinary account and were primed to welcome him when
he visited Middlesex with another of his co-authors, Judy Bernstein,
on October 9, 2007. continue
